Pre-Alpha Is Here!
Hello internet! Today's a big day that I'm very proud of, it's the first pre(pre) alpha launch of my upcoming game Target Shooter!
This is my first foray into using Unreal Engine 4, and it's literally been since 2001/2002 since I've done any sort of brush-based development and design! I'm dating myself I know, but I grew up using BSP editors such as GTKRadiant and making custom levels for Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, even dabbling in Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior stuff as well!
In a way, this is fulfilling a small dream I've always had in the back of my mind, which is pushing me forward with this initial pre-alpha release.
Since it's my first outing in Unreal Engine 4, the trickiest parts so far have been
- Engine optimization
- Pause Menu logic (for real!)
- File name management (for real!)
- Blueprint and widget management
- Understanding lighting structures, importance levels, and bounce lighting costs on performance
I have a readme file enclosed in this pre-alpha release with some more behind-the-scenes information regarding the game, the future of the game, and more. It'll be three levels and I'm hoping to have the full thing done by my birthday (January 2019), but we'll see! This project is more about the learning process and understanding the differences between Unity and Unreal, so it may take more time.
Thank you for all the support, and I look forward to hearing from you!
Game on,
Wes "KamiDaHobo" Gardner
